Guangdong Modern Dance Company, mainland China's first professional modern dance company, is internationally renowned for its exquisite and captivating performances. The company was founded in 1992 under the auspices of the Department of Culture of Guangdong Province.
Based in one of the fastest growing regions of the fastest growing economy in the world, GMDC has been hailed by the New York Times as "one of the big success stories of international dance" and "a pacesetter with a difference." Its vision of modern dance as a tool for self-expression has attracted some of the most talented dancers and choreographers in China. The company has paved the way for the development of contemporary dance informed by the unique social and cultural history of China. Works created by its dancers, resident choreographers, artistic directors and international guest artists have been staged at home and abroad, winning critical acclaim and enthusiastic audience responses throughout the world.

The company's former dancers and choreographers Qiao Yang, Shen Wei, Xing Liang, Sang Ji-jia, Li Han-zhong, Yang Yun-tao, Shi Xuan, Long Yun-na have gained international recognition with their outstanding accomplishments in dance.
The company tours extensively and has appeared at the India International Dance Festival, the Singapore International Arts Festival, Korea's Chang-Mu International Dance Festival, England's Edinburgh Festival, Millennium Moves of Germany, Holland Dance Festival, Japan's Tokyo Tiny Alice International Theatre Festival, Hong Kong Festival of Asian Arts, the International Festival of Contemporary Dance in Venice, and the Festival of China in Washington D.C.
