In my opinion, Conrad's books and short stories contain a perfect blend of action, adventure, historical placement, and psychological/sociological insight. Concerned primarily with the physical and economic demands of maritime industry, his sea stories nonetheless probe deeply into the natures and motivations of their primary characters. The espionage stories are only such by necessity, as the political circumstances surrounding the plot serve primarily as a setting for the character's deeper motivations and conflicts.

Books of his on my shelf (all purchased from New Page at the GZ Book Center near Tiyu Xi):

Heart of Darkness and Other Stories

Under Western Eyes

Three Sea Stories

The Secret Agent
