Guess most of the chaos will be over after the Asian Games, which one of the reasons why I am not living in Guangzhou until all of that is over. Guangzhou will end up with better transport infrastructure, construction will die down and traffic may be back to normal again. Air pollution may be here to stay though.
In the mean time, I suppose the best is to telecommute if your job allows it, like I do.
Language conflict? You mean the Cantonese protests? Cantonese is only a prominent dialect, just like Fujian in Taiwan or Fujian province. Guess it will be here to stay for a long time as it does all over the world. Cantonese can be found in most Chinatown around the world.
There are many taiwaniese in LA as well. It's ridiculous to depend on oversea cantonese to keep the langue while its original soil cant. I don't know what the cantonese protection is for. TV news is still broadcasted in cantonese now.
I think the local Guangzhou in sport and model have part to play on this Language.
Last Olympic I still remember the weightlifter from Panyu who speak to press in Cantonese that is encouraging.
