Hello everyone,
My partner and i are going to start an imported foods store in Guangzhou and are in the process of finding a suitable location. Does anyone know of a good, economically viable location they could recommend; i.e. lots of people walking by, relatively rich neighborhood, little competition. Any advice would be greatly appreciated and you just may end up with one in your neighborhood!
Thanks all
I dont think retail is the smart way, all the shops I see selling imported goods are always empty. After all people can pretty much buy most things from large stores these days like Metro & the HK store in Tai koo Hut which has everything .
Wholesale is a better option but you need to build your contacts . Haiju square has many wholesalers & a few doing western bulk goods. I think rents there would be way lower than high street that your consdering. Cultivate restaurant, hotel , embassy & club contacts & hire a good local as a salesperson ( poach them from another wholesaler).
Alternatively just sell to wholesalers throughout China. Open a small cooking school & piggy back product that way or a cafe doing the same. Or try a shop in one of the Westerners 5 star hotels but thatll cost you big time & Itll be a while until you see a return.
Good luck though.

Permalink Reply by Niels on October 17, 2012 at 1:57pm I wish you luck... there is an oversupply of import food in GZ.. I have Corner Deli around the corner.. LOL and they are good, but not cheap, and never busy!
Will be hard job to make money... I would not do it..
Also is your partner Chinese? If not get Chinese persons to rent your shop and sort it all out before you show your face.. otherwise you get fucked for sure...
