Idea Exchange goes to Cuba

This small island located in the Caribbean Sea, awakens imagination and curiosity due to its beautiful nature, fascinating culture and controversial political system. This talk will introduce the country, its culture, religion, people and customs with a very fast journey through history to understand its present.

Our speaker, Loany Calvo, is a regular attender at Idea Exchange. He’s a Cuban biochemist who moved here 6 years ago to work in the Chinese biotechnology industry and still makes regular trips home to keep in close contact with family and friends in Cuba.

Come join the party, listen to the music and the story of Cuba, and meet some of Guangzhou’s Cuban community. There’ll be a chance to win a bottle of original Havana Club Rum. And if you want to stay late and dance to Afro-Cuban music, don’t let anything stop you!

Odors act as powerful triggers which affect our emotions and our memory. They are used commercially by airlines, hotels, shops and offices. Studies reveal how some odors can make new born babies stop crying, and how the smell of grapefruit makes ladies feel younger.

Our biztalk speaker this month is a scent expert from Taiwan who will tell us trade secrets from the perfume industry, and how we can benefit from them. We’ll also get a chance to sample different scents and make our own perfume.

Wendy Huang, from Taiwan, came to Guangzhou after graduation and started a fragrance business, providing raw materials for shampoo, perfume and detergent factories. After a few years, she started her own perfume brand, Parfums Senze, and opened her first shop. Today her company designs odors for commercial brands such as OPPO and Grandview.

The Art of Mountain Biking

In less than 50 years, mountain biking (MTB) has grown from a niche hobby of ex-hippies in Northern California to a global phenomenon, spawning World Cup events since 1989, and a cross-country event in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In addition, more and more people are finding the mountain bike a great way to tour foreign countries on holiday in a way no other means can afford.

Here in Guangdong, where many of the world's bicycle frames and components are manufactured, John will talk about his own passion for the sport and explain and share thrilling video of some of the many disciplines in modern MTB that will be sure to get your heart racing and your mind planning the next opportunity to get on your bike.

John Knauss is from USA and works in Guangzhou as a designer and teacher of art and drama. He’s also a popular speaker and this will be the third time he’s given an IE talk. At the weekends there is nothing he likes better than to throw his leg over a mountain bike frame.

The world has witnessed the phenomenal fast rise of China as an industrial and technological superpower, significantly increasing living standards for its citizens. However, this rapid development has come at a high cost in its impact on the environment, particularly the air we breathe.

Focus and determined actions are needed, and considerable progress has been made over the past few years. Indeed, China is poised to take a global leading role in sustainable development, and it may be sooner than you think. So what is Government doing? What are companies doing? Lastly, what can YOU do?

Amy and Steffen are both experts in energy. Mi Zhou is a certified IECL coach and currently Investment Director for Asia Clean Capital (ACC). Steffen has 20 years CEO experience in China and is recipient of the highest honor given to foreigners by the Chinese Government, the “White Magnolia Award” for outstanding contributions to China’s social and economic development.

Come on holiday to the Land of Smiles. We’ll get off the beaten track, relax by the pool and listen to a girl from Thailand giving us an insider's guide to beaches, ancient temples and cultural attractions only dreamed of. Bink is a well-known member of the expat community in Guangzhou, but it's time now for her to go home. As part of her extended leaving party, she will be delivering us a talk about her beloved country. You're invited to come share experiences and get practical tips on how to get to beautiful places away from the crowds. Come celebrate Thailand with us!

This week's presentation and networking comes from Balazs, who you may already know as the Hungarian paddler with Guangzhou International Dragon Boat Club, and organiser of couchsurfing events.

He’s also a published travel guide author and travels for a living in China. He visits factories as a sourcing agent when he works, and travels as far away from those factories as possible when he's on vacation.

In almost all business fields, we see super talented professionals only opting to work for others. Though few of them would find it hard to start their own business, the majority lack the will, courage or ability to take risks.

Shivi Sabharwal is a prominent member of the Indian community in Guangzhou. He started in business at the young age of 15 years and now after 37 years and many ups and downs will share his experience. Over the last 10 years, his trading company has grown from 2 to 37 employees. It has succeeded in Guangzhou from literally no money in hand.

Shivi will share insights into what it takes to be successful in business, and show us that lack of funds or opportunities are lame excuses for not starting your own business. In fact, it’s entirely possible to start and grow a business with almost no personal financial investment, if you know what you’re doing and have the right attitude.

Every month on the second Tuesday Idea Exchange embraces art, science and music. Our May event welcomes anyone interested in Jazz, from serious musicos to the merely curious.

Our speaker, Jay, will focus on post-War American jazz from Bebop to Cool and Jazz Fusion. This was a period when great innovators such as Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Frank Zappa pushed the genre forward into new directions.

Jay McCann works at the American Embassy here in Guangzhou. He has played guitar with several jazz bands and also performed in theatre, including a theatrical adaptation of Pink Floyd’s The Wall.

What’s the most important thing to you – of course your health! And what’s most important for this planet which sustains us? Is it possible for us to lead a life which gives us a healthy body, a wealthy lifestyle and a sustainable future for our families?

On the first Tuesday of every month at Idea Exchange we focus on health and the environment. Our main speaker this week is Yu Yin, a veteran environmentalist for 15 years, who works for Guangdong Harmony Foundation (GHF), a community foundation which has been supporting social and environmental programs around the Pearl River Delta since 2009.

Yu Yin will lead a discussion panel, which includes Shania Zheng from Eco Canton, who will talk about the deadly threat of microbeads, Fabiola Benitez from Global Friendship, who will tell us about her new environmental initiative and Daria Mishchuk from Pledge to the Environment, who will tell us some practical ways to live sustainably. Come meet the panel and exchange your ideas.
