Come to Portugal, where the land meets the ocean! It's a place where in a meter of land you can have kilometers of art, history, good food and above all fantastic weather.

As well as being on the geographical edge of Europe this little country is on the cutting edge of social progress and sustainable energy.

Dr Sandro Rasgado grew up in Portugal, and he's also lived in Angola and in the UK.His love of travelling and meeting new people has led him to Guangzhou, where he now lives and works as a dentist.

Stress is something which affects all of us in Guangzhou and is not harmful in small quantities. However, if we allow it to build up, it can cause anxiety and lack of focus, leading to low confidence, bad health and poor productivity.

For our two speakers this week, success in business or any other field, such as relationships, studies or leadership, requires focus, not just on your targets, but also inward focus. They will give practical tips and relaxation exercises to help us reduce stress and focus on our own inner happiness.

Alisha and Lavanya come from India, where they run a successful mail order business and have recently appeared in the Times of India as trendsetting entrepreneurs. They claim Mind Management and stress reduction to be the secret of their success and tour India regularly to speak on the subject for the Art of Living foundation.

Anyone familiar with video games like Minecraft, Pokémon Go and Zombies Run! will know the power of gamification – to make a task motivating, compulsive, even addictive. But do you know how elements from such games can be used to change behaviour and increase efficiency in any process?

This talk is of value to us all! Employers - make your staff more useful and the work more fun. Designers - increase user satisfaction and efficiency. Teachers - increase motivation and participation in your lessons. Company reps - increase engagement and loyalty for your brand.

Kartik is a student of game design from India and has developed his own gamification app called ‘Planters’.  He will share his insights and knowledge by referring to some of his favourite video games and show us useful applications in everything from education and health to business.

Colombia is the name on everyone’s tongue at the moment. After 50 years of civil war, the country’s Nobel prize-winning President Santos has negotiated peace with FARC rebels. A bright new future of beckons.

Find your passion!

Are you lacking confidence or purpose, finding It difficult to achieve your goals or even to find something you feel passionate about? In that case this week’s Idea Exchange may just be the tonic you need!

The Beauty of Silence!

Idea Exchange is back to share the love! And we've found a fantastic new venue to gather in the heart of Guangzhou’s Tianhe District within easy reach of transport links.

On this special day we aim to broaden our understanding of deaf people and the hard-of-hearing. We’ve invited Linda Wang, an audiologist and speech therapist to increase our awareness of hearing loss, whichvaffects over one billion people worldwide but is little understood.

Linda will explain hearing loss and the very special Deaf culture which has evolved around it. She'll give us advice on how to protect our hearing and how technology can improve hearing. And as our new venue is probably the most romantic setting in the city, her fascinating talk will finish with some words on the language of love.

Our new venue is E-Coffee, just a few minutes’ walk from exit C of Tianhe’s Tiyu Zhongxin metro station on line 1. Entry fee is now 30rmb (or 10rmb with student ID).

The Story of The Happy Monk - 24 January 2017

Happy Monk is the award-wining F&B phenomenon which hit Guangzhou in 2010 and has since expanded to four incredibly popular bar/restaurants in central Guangzhou, with more to come.

This Tuesday we’ve invited Jeremy Sargent, the founder and owner of the HM brand, to talk about the core values and culture of his company. He’ll tell us how it all started and the challenges he’s had to overcome. He’ll also give some tips on starting up and managing an ‘authentic experience venue’.

Apart from being a restauranteur and publican, Jeremy runs his own Law Firm, is a legal adviser to the British and New Zealand Governments, Chairman of the British Chamber of Commerce, and has been awarded the OBE by Queen Elizabeth II of England for his services to British business in China.

This is the second of two Idea Exchange Biztalks this month. After this one we are taking a Spring Festival break until 14 February. Join one of our WeChat groups now and look out for news of our Valentines Day event!

Tales from the Pizza Factory - 17 January 2017

11 years ago Matt Slack came to China and worked his way up the corporate ladder to be General Manager of Los Angeles based trading company Bamko before their sale to a publicly traded company. But what inspired him to leave the executive life to start a pizza shop?

On January 17th, Matt will talk about important lessons he has learned through both his career and entrepreneurship. He'll discuss why "following your passion" isn't good advice, important decisions that were made when creating his new brand, and how The Pizza Factory grew to be Guangzhou's hottest pizza restaurant in only four months.

Bringing Opera up to Date!

Love, jealousy and megalomania! Shakespeare’s themes are still alive and kicking 400 years after his death, and every year there are new productions of his plays as films, theatre, songs, even cartoons.

Tang Xianzu was a Chinese playwright who died in the same year as Shakespeare. He is known for his Kunqu Opera style but today that’s seen as boring and out of date. So we’ve invited two experts to tell us why and give their own ideas for a modern version of Chinese opera. We’ll also meet a Chinese Opera troop and watch them perform!

Mr Jonathan Ellman, from England, teaches Theatre and English at Guangwai University. Mr Jiang Xingfa, from a family of famous Peking Opera artists, is Art Director of a Guangzhou Opera Institute. The Tianyuan Kunqu Troupe performs regularly to the public for the love of their art.

Come enjoy a stimulating evening with a friendly crowd at this Tuesday 10th January and every Tuesday. The entry fee is 25 rmb (or free with student ID). Constellations Coffee is just 5 minutes' walk from Liede metro station Exit A towards Liede Bridge then turn right into Hunter Lane.
