If you live and work in modern Tianhe it’s sometimes easy to miss the deep influence of old Canton and its 2000 year old history which lies all around us. Exquisite villas and gardens are dotted throughout the city, many of which have married western design to traditional Chinese architecture.

This is the city where Iris Huang was born and grew up. After returning from study in Australia, she worked here in international marketing, and had a dream to ‘revitalise the old town”. She’s already started a cafe, florist and antique store in Xiguan and runs guided tours. Her marketing experience is put to good use in unveiling Guangzhou’s rich culture. Come with us on a tour of this city’s amazing history, architecture and multiculturalism.

Doing Business in China - How to Avoid the Scams

China is the workshop of the world and there are export opportunities for everyone from Fortune 500 companies to individuals with a suitcase. But in the rush to get their hands on the treasure so many people have got their fingers burned, usually because they didn’t do their homework.

First you need to do a thorough background check on the people you are doing business with. Then you need to communicate smartly and de-code the signals you get when you visit your supplier. Phoebe will use her extensive experience to explain these areas. She’ll also discuss quality control, price cutting, logistics, design protection and patenting.

Phoebe Kang is a Guangzhou businesswoman, who will use her 10 year experience of succeeding in the China export business to give practical information and tips. Come share your own plans and experience.

Idea Exchange visits Greece

Greece is famous for so many things we just don’t know where to start! So we’re going to focus on just two of those: the idyllic holiday destination and the foundation of Western thought. A tall order you may think but Lampros is passionate about both his country and philosophy so we are in for one big treat.

On our epic voyage we’ll find beautiful beaches, ancient theatres, music and nightlife, Olympian sport and even the origin of Christmas. The modern world owes so much to Greece. Come share world culture and the warmth of friends this Tuesday.

Lampros Papagiannis lectures in Greek and Greek civilization at Guangzhou University of Foreign Studies. This is his second year in Guangzhou and he’s still struggling to get a full sentence right in Chinese.

A Journalist in China

We owe a great debt to journalists. Their information and insights inform our lives. But journalism in China has had some bad press recently! Reports show record numbers of journalists are leaving the profession. Their reasons include bad pay and low morale as well as technological reasons.

So we’ve invited a well-known journalist and local celebrity, Matt Horn, to speak to us about his work as a journalist and journalism lecturer. He will share his thoughts on starting out and what it takes to be a good journalist, the art of interviewing, and how social media is impacting on the industry he loves. He will talk about the many highs, and a few lows, of his career here.

Chances are you’ve already seen Matt hosting a media show or public event. He’s a radio and TV host for popular shows like ‘My Guangdong’ and ‘Face Time’. He also writes for newspapers such as China Daily, Global Times and That’s PRD. In 2012 he was awarded the Guangdong Friendship Award by Guangzhou Province, and in 2013 became a Member of the British Empire (MBE) awarded by Queen Elizabeth II.

Healthcare in China

China’s health care system is one of the best in the region, but the quality of hospitals and patient care varies greatly. If you suddenly find you need treatment tomorrow, do you know what to do or which hospital you will go to? And if you’re an expat, do you have the right medical insurance with the right features to cover it?

Dr Sandro Rasgado is returning to give you an insight into the health sector in China and also to provide valuable information on how to choose medical health insurance. This time there will be a longer than usual Q& A session to ask questions about healthcare.

Sandro is well-known to many at Idea Exchange for the talk he gave on his home-country, Portugal. He lives here in Guangzhou and works as a dentist.

The female form in Art

The female figure has been the subject of art and fashion throughout history. Both in China and the West, the look of your body is subject to fashion and a reflection of culture, religion and economics.

Nicola will show how female beauty has changed and give advice on how to enjoy art by combining history and culture with appreciation of the image. She’ll lead the audience in exploring reasons for changes and then forecast future trends. Whether or not you work in the fashion industry you can gain insights from this talk.

Nicola is a painter and art-lover who runs a non-profit Wechat magazine with the aim of bringing art knowledge and beauty to its readers. She has also worked as an art guide and interpreter for galleries such as Art 23 Gallery in Guangzhou.
