This week's presentation and networking comes from Balazs, who you may already know as the Hungarian paddler with Guangzhou International Dragon Boat Club, and organiser of couchsurfing events.

He’s also a published travel guide author and travels for a living in China. He visits factories as a sourcing agent when he works, and travels as far away from those factories as possible when he's on vacation.

He'll talk about his photography trips to the mountains of West Sichuan, sharing tips on travel and photography. He’s planning his next trip, which you might just want to join.

In almost all business fields, we see super talented professionals only opting to work for others. Though few of them would find it hard to start their own business, the majority lack the will, courage or ability to take risks.

Shivi Sabharwal is a prominent member of the Indian community in Guangzhou. He started in business at the young age of 15 years and now after 37 years and many ups and downs will share his experience. Over the last 10 years, his trading company has grown from 2 to 37 employees. It has succeeded in Guangzhou from literally no money in hand.

Shivi will share insights into what it takes to be successful in business, and show us that lack of funds or opportunities are lame excuses for not starting your own business. In fact, it’s entirely possible to start and grow a business with almost no personal financial investment, if you know what you’re doing and have the right attitude.

Every month on the second Tuesday Idea Exchange embraces art, science and music. Our May event welcomes anyone interested in Jazz, from serious musicos to the merely curious.

Our speaker, Jay, will focus on post-War American jazz from Bebop to Cool and Jazz Fusion. This was a period when great innovators such as Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Frank Zappa pushed the genre forward into new directions.

Jay McCann works at the American Embassy here in Guangzhou. He has played guitar with several jazz bands and also performed in theatre, including a theatrical adaptation of Pink Floyd’s The Wall.

What’s the most important thing to you – of course your health! And what’s most important for this planet which sustains us? Is it possible for us to lead a life which gives us a healthy body, a wealthy lifestyle and a sustainable future for our families?

On the first Tuesday of every month at Idea Exchange we focus on health and the environment. Our main speaker this week is Yu Yin, a veteran environmentalist for 15 years, who works for Guangdong Harmony Foundation (GHF), a community foundation which has been supporting social and environmental programs around the Pearl River Delta since 2009.

Yu Yin will lead a discussion panel, which includes Shania Zheng from Eco Canton, who will talk about the deadly threat of microbeads, Fabiola Benitez from Global Friendship, who will tell us about her new environmental initiative and Daria Mishchuk from Pledge to the Environment, who will tell us some practical ways to live sustainably. Come meet the panel and exchange your ideas.

Australia is often called ‘the Lucky Country’. It’s the 17th largest economy in the world but with fewer people than live in greater Guangzhou! Despite cultural dislocation and environmental degredation, it’s a place of clean modern cities, vast open spaces and a remarkable culture stretching back thousands of years.

Viola Liang Xu went to Australia with rmb5000 in savings and came back with rmb100,000 along with a wealth of new experiences. She will tell us about some of the varied jobs she did, the friends she met and her 3 month stay with an aboriginal community in the central Australian outback.

If you think you already know about Australia, come listen to an alternative account from a Chinese girl who is not afraid to embrace the unknown. She has returned with a lot of practical advice about how to have your great Australian adventure.

Business models in China are transforming rapidly from selling products to services. And just as products are designed to attract customers, good customer service also needs design.

For IE Biztalk this week, Peipei will talk about service design, and how it drives innovation in business strategy and customer experience. We’re all familiar with bad service from airline companies, so she will use this as a case study, then move into a short workshop on how Idea Exchange can provide a better service.

Since completing her Masters in Oslo, Norway, Peipei has worked for giants such as Telenor, Audi, 3M and Adidas. She currently works on mobile app concepts for Tencent.

Amateur Dramatics

Those of us who took part in drama and theatre classes at school know the value of play acting for improving confidence and expression in adult life. But sadly there are few chances to pursue amateur dramatics in Guangzhou. Victoria Xu, an HR Manager at HSBC, is a member of one of Guangzhou's few theatre groups. She will tell us of the benefits and opportunities and also show us some drama games to try for ourselves.

It’s the second Tuesday of the month, which means Idea Exchange is exploring innovative art and science projects. Perhaps this is an area which Guangzhou is not well-known for.   As well as Victoria’s drama workshop we will have a short talk about watersports and environment conservation on the beautiful Pearl River and Guangzhou’s other waterways.

Contemporary Storytelling with Music

If you’ve visited our new Idea Exchange venue you might have wondered when we’re going to use the beautiful grand piano next to the stage. This Tuesday we’ve invited a well-known local pianist and composer to come play it and tell us about composing.

Andre Ley will show us how easy it is to form melodies and then change the pattern to become completely different styles of music, by playing examples from pop and cinema. His music is like storytelling. It will get you hooked and listening intently for the next line.

Andre is a pianist and composer who graduated from the Xinghai Conservatory of Music. He performs in concerts and recitals regularly and is sometimes known as the Andy Warhol of Contemporary Piano, for the way he reproduces and transforms well-known musical scores.

Come to Portugal, where the land meets the ocean! It's a place where in a meter of land you can have kilometers of art, history, good food and above all fantastic weather.

As well as being on the geographical edge of Europe this little country is on the cutting edge of social progress and sustainable energy.

Dr Sandro Rasgado grew up in Portugal, and he's also lived in Angola and in the UK.His love of travelling and meeting new people has led him to Guangzhou, where he now lives and works as a dentist.

Stress is something which affects all of us in Guangzhou and is not harmful in small quantities. However, if we allow it to build up, it can cause anxiety and lack of focus, leading to low confidence, bad health and poor productivity.

For our two speakers this week, success in business or any other field, such as relationships, studies or leadership, requires focus, not just on your targets, but also inward focus. They will give practical tips and relaxation exercises to help us reduce stress and focus on our own inner happiness.

Alisha and Lavanya come from India, where they run a successful mail order business and have recently appeared in the Times of India as trendsetting entrepreneurs. They claim Mind Management and stress reduction to be the secret of their success and tour India regularly to speak on the subject for the Art of Living foundation.
